Greetings Applicant!
I am very pleased that you are interested in applying to the University of Salamanca, Spain summer ‘Program in Language and Culture’. The year of 2009 will mark 20 years that I have been taking students to the University of Salamanca for summer study. Imagine living for a month in the midst of one of the most beautiful cities of Spain unmatched in monuments and the arts. Open air jazz concerts in the historic quarter in the very shadow of its Cathedrals. Yes, Salamanca is the only city to boast two fully functioning cathedrals joined together by a common wall. Art exhibits, sacred music concerts, hundreds of cafes, dazzling Flamenco performances, lively music clubs to satisfy every taste of music, theatre, movies, the Tour de France, stunning beautiful weather, excursions to other cities, including one to Portugal, and so much more awaits you. The crown jewel is the Plaza Mayor, at the very heart of the city, the most beautiful in Spain and one of the best in all of Europe. The Centro offers you a July and/or August opportunity to study. You may also choose semester or full year modules. In addition, in 2009 the Centro is offering for the first time a 3 week program in Tropea, Italy, open up the Italy Program link in this website for details.
Whatever option you choose summer study at one of the most prestigious universities in all of Europe is truly an honor. The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, is known as the ‘Oxford’ of Spain. The summer program for international students was founded in 1929 and is today one of the most popular in Spain. It will fire your imagination to stroll in the same streets where so many illustrious figures have walked—Miguel Unamuno, John of the Cross, Teresa of Jesus, Cervantes, Ignatius of Loyola, Columbus, Fray Luis de León, Antonio de Nebrija. Now it will be your turn to leave your mark and be changed forever. The many activities outlined in the enclosed packet are part of a rich program that embraces the intellectual and spiritual legacy of Spain through the unique role of the city of Salamanca and its renowned University.
Although I am a tenured professor of European History at Seattle Pacific University this program is APPROVED by SPU, but is not officially affiliated in any way. Students apply, and make payments, directly to Centro Fray Luis de León. Centro Fray Luis de León has no financial aid arrangements with any institution, but of course students may, on their own, seek financial aid from any source. Students will receive an official transcript with letter grades from the University of Salamanca, and your home institution will use these to grant you transfer credit. I am here to answer any of your questions and to help you in your application process. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Alberto Ferreiro,Director, Centro Fray Luis de León
Professor of European History, Seattle Pacific University
